Warren Weisman is a bush pilot in Alaska. Thrown out of the French Foreign Legion for attempting to enlist underage, he went on to ride a Harley-Davidson chopper with the Hell's Angels. The author was onboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence when it was the first U.S. warship to respond to the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. He was arrested and imprisoned for protesting against the use of U.S. airpower against civilian targets and was released only after a lengthy hunger strike. He is an avid backpacker and enjoys playing the Irish fiddle.

Inspired by Thoreau, he spent two years in a remote cabin along Alaska's Talkeetna River with his son, Wyatt. They coexisted peacefully among the state's highest concentration of giant Alaskan brown bears, within view of Denali, The Great One, what is commonly known as Mt. McKinley. It was there that work on Apollo's Arrow was completed.
